Introduction

Hi, my name is Gabriel and i am engineer with a lot of experience in java who loves domotic. I Want to turn my home into an automatic place, the target is to controll all with my cell phone or my computer, and i am close to make it.

And it is a really very fun hobby, there is a lot of people doing stuff like that. In my case have a lot of experience in software, but i don' t have much experience in electronics. Since i discovered arduino and  raspberry pi i was introduced in the electronic world, i have to read a lot but i do a lot of things that i couldn' t believe i made it, and with few amount of money!!.
There are private solution to automate your home but there are very expensive, you could do the same stuff with much less money and the experience to do it by yourself!, i think this is the best part. In this first post i want to introduce the arquitecture how it starts and the components that you need to know to introduce you in the world of internet of things.
First of all you need a server to install your domotic control, i use openhab, there are a lot, but i know this one in particular. It is a very usefull open source domotic server with a lot of binding with known devices, like TCP protocol, HTTP, Twitter, Mail, etc. with developed interfaces in web, android and ios.
As i sais is open source and it is very easy to contribute with the community, it is very active and they help you a lot with your questions.
The ideal place to install your server is in a raspberry pi, a mini computer with low energy consumption and very tiny size, like a credit card!!. The raspberry pi has digital pins for control things like temperature sensors, leds, servo, in my case i have a infrared emitter installed to control the air conditioner from the computer.
The other usefull device  for domotic is the arduino, a open source microcontroller with a very large active community. The difference between a computer and a microcontroller is that the computer is a multi purpose device and the microcontroller is a dedicated device. In the diagram i show you the arquitecture of my home

so, that' s all for now, i hope you enjoyed it.
